NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, hesitated to declare this decision promptly following his electoral win in November.

"This decision rested on the security of my family and the importance of directing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live there, the community will always live a part of me and the work I do," he added.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.

With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent outpaces the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
