Amid a major diplomatic initiative, Donald Trump’s special envoy is slated to hold discussions with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders in Berlin over the coming days, as US officials presses for a definitive strategy to conclude the protracted war.
Peace Discussions and Ceasefire Planning
Germany stated it will facilitate US and Ukrainian representatives for weekend consultations focusing on a possible truce, ahead of a more extensive summit involving EU officials and President Zelenskyy scheduled for Monday. During a national address, Zelenskyy affirmed the upcoming engagement with Trump envoy Steve Witkoff: “Critically, I will be meeting with representatives from President Trump, and there will also be meetings with our allies in Europe, with numerous officials, regarding the establishment of peace – a political agreement to terminate the war,” he noted.
Kremlin Conditions for a Ceasefire
At the same time, Russian foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov restated that Russia would exclusively support a ceasefire once Ukrainian forces leave territory within the eastern oblast they still control. Ushakov added that Moscow’s security forces and interior ministry forces would remain in sections of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas even if the area were to become a demilitarised zone under a future settlement – a demand considered unacceptable for Ukraine.
Overnight Assaults Target Ukraine's Critical Systems
Amid a separate escalation, Russian forces targeted five oblasts in Ukraine during the night, focusing on the country’s power and maritime infrastructure, per President Zelenskyy. He reported the assaults involved more than 450 unmanned aerial vehicles and 30 missiles. With the mercury hovering around freezing, Ukraine’s interior minister, Ihor Klymenko, stated over a million residents were rendered without electricity.
Furthermore, an strike on the coastal hub of Odesa led to grain silos igniting, as stated by a senior Ukrainian official Oleksiy Kuleba. Local officials reported that two individuals were injured in strikes on the wider region.
Defense and Aid Updates
Against a backdrop of growing worries about the Russian threat, Berlin said it will dispatch a team of engineers to Poland to support a project to fortify the country’s border with Belarus. Poland, a staunch supporter of Ukraine, unveiled intentions last year to secure a long stretch of its frontier. The primary mission of the German soldiers will be “construction and engineering work,” a defence ministry representative clarified.
In a separate incident, about 480 people were safely removed from a rail service running between the city in Poland of Przemysl and Kyiv after police responded to a report about a threat. No one was injured, and authorities did not elaborate on the specific threat. Polish security services remain on heightened alert due to multiple incidents to sabotage rail traffic on the route linking Warsaw to the border with Ukraine.
Elsewhere, Ukrainian naval officials alleged Russia of intentionally targeting a civilian ship from Turkey carrying sunflower oil to Egypt with a drone on Saturday. The statement said the vessel ‘VIVA’ was struck but continued on its journey, with none of the 11 crew wounded.
Additionally, Kyiv received 114 detainees freed by Belarus on Saturday, per the country’s PoW coordination centre. The freed captives will receive healthcare, and those Belarusian citizens who wish will be relocated to Poland or Lithuania.
