A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is presently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Havana.
The Mexican government has deployed naval assets and military search aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were transporting a minimum of nine sailors, per a official statement.
The vessels had been projected to arrive in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, authorities reported.
The Caribbean nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country struggles through repeated power outages across the country.
"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and each boat are outfitted with appropriate navigational gear and communication devices," a representative involved in the effort said.
The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their consular staff.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That vessel, called "a modern Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bikes and food.
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of efforts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba since January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country began.
The United Nations have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of fifty thousand operations called off in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from several representatives underscoring the complex state of bilateral relations.
In response to recent statements, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that early stages of discussions had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The naval forces affirmed it was dedicated to using every available asset at its command to locate the boats and ensure the well-being of the sailors.
At this time, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
