When I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. âMy sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,â remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. âHe was against me playing soccer but itâs because he had never watched me,â explains Camara.
In time, on âone beautiful day,â Camara earned his fatherâs blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, the famed academy â the club that produced talents including Sadio ManĂ©, Papiss CissĂ© and IsmaĂŻla Sarr â were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were âastonishedâ to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. âThey took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,â Camara said.
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, âa year to remember,â starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of ManĂ©. âAdapting was never a challenge,â states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's âhumilityâ and superb skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. âIt is a habit that is following me!â he jokes.
At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. âWhen I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,â Camara noted.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. âWe are the favourites â there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own countryâŠ,â he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. âI feel really comfortable here,â he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
âThe pressure is on us â we canât hide from that. If you beat England in their own country⊠it instills confidence.â
Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
