England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they secure the relatively straightforward passage for a competition hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an Three Lions match since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to stage the Three Lions for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The team are set to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning their group, their knockout stage opener would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean starting the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The event was inaugurated at an event in a London landmark on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were heckled as they arrived the location by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged the Israeli team to be removed from global football because of the situation in Gaza.
Banners were held up with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
The opening game of Euro 2028 will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will involve Wales if they qualify.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5pm.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be used for European club finals from next season, will cater to families and help connect with a wider spectrum of audiences.
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would play similarly at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will enter the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the tournament through that route.
The Birmingham venue and The North London arena complete the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
“The event will be a competition for the supporters and a festival of everything we love about the sport – its fervor and ability to foster unity.”
More than three million tickets, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are expected to be released to fans.
