The artist has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the UK's small live music spots.

He was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was declared the best record of the last 12 months.

He has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in recognition of the essential function small stages had in his early career.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing this success if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," remarked the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by applying a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

He also joined in, generating in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to help 38 small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported locations that were facing potential shutdown due to issues arising from flooding, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Other venues received financial assistance in improving amenities and gear that helped artists and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from concerts in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

The musician is far from the only musician to contribute his honor winnings to good deeds.

When the band won the trophy in the mid-90s for their release the album, frontman the singer announced that the group would contribute their cash to the charity War Child.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her award between a few organizations, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," she explained to outlets.

Previously, the band gave their winnings to the community center that developed their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients the group gave their prize to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"The victory was ample," said vocalist Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the cake. So our success impacted another person's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved a couple of small stages in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

The Joiners in the city and The Croft in Bristol were acquired under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by a national body and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
