Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD shared video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
