In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Context: Rising Strains and Prior Events
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
