Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
