The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose influence on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
