Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was I would book a place to stay when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a major event was happening and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could spend the night at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, not like the one back home, is not open around the clock. Not knowing quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and found myself drifting in the direction of the casino, believing I could pass the night in an establishment operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for nailing an interview the next day, however, being a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

I must have looked out of place because a female student spotted me loitering in downtown and wondered if I was OK. I shared my situation and without hesitation she said I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at ANU – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering a meal: one of the stuffed baguettes she brought back her work shift. I had access to the bathroom and a secure location and secure to sleep.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she accepted as a young woman letting a man she had only just encountered crash at her place. In those days I operated under my own unawareness and was oblivious about things like that. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she offered that help – but still incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up go to ANU, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish the universe has repaid her act of kindness many times over. Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
