Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

ā€œIt feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,ā€ noted Cappa. ā€œIt's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.ā€

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
