At the checkout at the grocery store, I encountered a problem paying for my $100 grocery shop. This wasn't that I couldn't afford it, instead, I'd neglected to shift cash over to our regular bank account. I attempted to transfer the funds promptly at the checkout, but the banking app had crashed.
My two young children were with me alongside me, a toddler and a baby, with one child had started screaming. With a growing queue of shoppers in line behind me, the store employee set aside my receipt for the items already scanned and saved it, then moved on to assisting other customers.
Frantically, I called my husband requesting that he to come down to the supermarket bringing his debit card to cover the cost, because it looked doubtful that I could succeed in completing the payment. As I spoke to him, a female shopper behind me covered her shopping costs – before saying to the employee, “I’ll pay for hers, too.”
I tried to protest, but she insisted. Her only response was:
“Just pay it back in the community somehow.”
It meant a great deal to me that a person would act so kindly on my behalf – it was profoundly compassionate. That woman could see I felt stressed and ashamed in the crowded checkout line and intervened to help.
We live in quite a small town, but because it all happened so fast, I cannot be certain exactly who helped that covered my shopping, thus, I have not had the chance to express gratitude.
But I did honour that kind woman’s request. At the time, I had a whole bunch of infant items available through social media sales. But after that day, I removed the listings and advertised in a neighborhood trading forum allowing me to donate all items without charge to a person requiring assistance. A woman with a six-week-old foster baby took me up on the offer, and I felt happy that I managed to extend the goodwill.
